Standard Size

The faucet has a steady, rhythmic leak.

It’s three in the morning and the house is cold.

The porcelain is a vast, white valley

ending in a drain that’s starting to fail.

There is a rust stain right near the drain,

a brownish-purple smudge like a bruised eye.

I sit on the edge and watch the water pool.

It’s just a standard size, five feet long,

but tonight it feels like a hole

I could lay in and never get back out.
