Thermal Shock

The radiator died at four.

I heard the metal groan and give up.

Now the floorboards are sheets of ice

waiting for the cowardice of my feet.

I grip the edge of the mattress

until my knuckles are white and dead

looking.

One step

and the truth of the cold

hits me harder than the light.
