Desire

by Emily Dickinson · (no date)

WHO never wanted,—maddest joy

      Remains to him unknown;

The banquet of abstemiousness

      Surpasses that of wine.

Within its hope, though yet ungrasped

      Desire's perfect goal,

No nearer, lest reality

      Should disenthrall thy soul.
