The lawnmower has been sitting in the weeds

The lawnmower has been sitting in the weeds

since the middle of last July.

I finally grabbed the handle for my needs

and gave it a pull to see if it would die.

The hemp cord didn't even put up a fight,

it just unraveled in a spray of blonde hair.

Individual whiskers stood up in the light

like the rope had seen a ghost standing there.

It’s a dry and scratchy kind of release,

leaving me with a handful of useless grit.

Some things don't break for the sake of peace,

they just get tired of being part of it.
