Your new kitchen is a gallery of things

Your new kitchen is a gallery of things

I wasn't worth enough to own.

It’s funny the way a photograph stings

when you’re sitting in the dark, alone.

There’s that sea salt sitting by the stove,

the expensive kind in the ceramic jar.

I remember the way we argued and strove

over why we couldn't take the budget that far.

I see the blue pilot light on the range,

steady and sharp, a tiny crown of fire.

It’s amazing how quickly the landscape can change

when you finally find what you think you desire.

It looks so clean, so organized and bright,

with the convection oven and the marble top.

I hope you can sleep in that perfect light

where the ticking of the clock doesn't stop.
