Indoor Sun

They told me it only needed the air

and a splash of the sink once a week.

But it’s sitting alone in the hallway there

looking yellow and tired and weak.

The dirt is dry and it’s pulled away

from the edge of the plastic pot.

It hasn't seen any of the light of day

in this dusty and quiet spot.

It was built for the heat of a desert floor

and the wide and the open sky.

Now it’s slumped in the dark by the bedroom door

just waiting its turn to die.
