I turn the kitchen tap too fast

I turn the kitchen tap too fast

and the pipes let out a hollow, metal groan.

It’s a long wait for the clock to strike twelve

when your stomach is arguing with your bone.

The third glass of water is heavy and flat,

a temporary weight to trick the gut.

I stare at the screen of the bank app,

waiting for the doors of the day to shut.
