The streetlights flickered on with a hum

The streetlights flickered on with a hum

just as I crossed the empty park.

I felt my fingers going numb

against the coming of the dark.

A chain-link swing hit the metal pole,

a rhythmic clink like a failing heart.

It’s a lonely sound for a tired soul

watching the whole thing fall apart.

In the sandpit, a red mitten lies

face-up and filled with last night’s rain.

It looks like a hand that finally tries

to wave goodbye to all the pain.
