Inside Click

The click of the latch, a final sound,
then silence, heavy, all around.
He’s gone. Not out the back, but through the front.
A sharp departure, a sudden stunt.
The solid wood, it thudded shut,
leaving me here, like a 'but'
left hanging in the air, unsaid.
Just the refrigerator hum, instead.
And the space feels bigger, cold and wide,
with nowhere left for me to hide.
Just me, and this quiet, in the light
of what he took into the night.
