Weight of Distance

Tiny fingers grasp at the air,

this child in my arms, yet nothing is there.

A warmth expected, but ice fills the space,

holding a stranger, my heart can't keep pace.

The room swells with joy, but I’m lost in the sea,

a wave of connection that never hits me.

She wriggles and whimpers, alive in her grace,

but all that I feel is a haunting embrace.
