Damp Burden

The dampness clings, heavy as unspoken words,
a sodden weight against my bare shoulders,
pressing memories of too many storms,
of silence after shouting, laundry done wrong,
and steam swirling, hot enough to choke back
what I cannot scrub off. I stand, rooted,
a statue in the bathroom, this towel a shroud.
