That scent lingers sweet and bitter

That scent lingers, sweet and bitter,

like remnants of a good meal you wish would stay,

a whisper of her laughter folded into the air,

each note chases away silence, refuses to fade.

A half-finished coffee, steam rising,

a table set for two, now just one,

her absence fills the space like a well-worn coat,

every breath takes me back, even as I move on.
