Brief Dark, Hard Light

The sky went bruised, then black,

a sudden crack

split the air wide open.

Rain hit the pane,

a frantic drum, again

and again, no stopping.

Then everything just went,

the power sent

into a sudden void.

A breath held tight,

just lightning's stark white

flash across the void.

And then the surge,

the kitchen light's harsh

glare, buzzing back to life.

Too bright now, too much seen,

where only shadows had been,

a raw, electric knife.
