Playback

Looking for that picture,

you know the one I mean.

But my thumb slipped, then suddenly,

a forgotten screen

came to life, just three seconds,

of a day I'd put away.

And then my voice. A raw, tight sound,

that made me turn away.

It wasn't me, not really,

that tinny, sharp surprise.

Too quick, too high, a stranger's plea,

behind unfamiliar eyes.

It cut off short, a gasp, a stutter,

leaving silence, thick and deep.

What did I think I was, I wonder,

what secrets do I keep

from even me?
