Above Me, Brightness

The ceiling plaster,

it holds its breath.

Then, a crack.

Not sound of failing,

but a brightness.

A sudden, full blast

of human joy.

Not a small chuckle,

or the nervous kind.

No, this was something

unspent.

It hit,

a hard thing against

my quiet afternoon.

Made the teacup jump.

Made me look up,

as if the sound could

make a hole.

Let in light,

or something worse.

Something I'm not part of.
