Gravity

The hallway light has a nervous hum.

I heard the heavy door of 4B click,

the sound of his boots on the stairs.

I let my grip go loose

and watched the brass ring hit the floor.


The keys slid across the dirty linoleum,

coming to rest against the radiator's ribs.

He didn't look down or even slow his pace.

He just stepped over the metal heap

and left me standing there in the dark.
