I’ve been sitting here since noon

I’ve been sitting here since noon

trying to write a check for the power.

The red plastic says 'Dairy Property'

in raised letters against my shin.

When I stood up, my thighs were a grid

of small, angry rectangles.

In the corner of one plastic diamond,

a spider has been dead for months.

It’s a dry, brown knot of legs

trapped in the geometry.

I could move it with a pencil,

but it’s the only thing in this room

that seems to be staying in place.
