Deflection

It’s sat by the pothole for a month,

a bright orange hat for the street.

But tonight it’s lying in the gutter,

pushed over by the rain and the fleet.

The heavy base is scuffed and torn,

with a bite taken out of the rim.

A delivery truck didn't see the turn

and left it looking lopsided and grim.

I thought about picking it up,

setting it back on its square.

But the water is running too fast,

and honestly, I don't much care.
