Partition

The thread was hanging by an inch

so I ducked inside to loop it through.

The lady in number four

wasn't making any noise except

the sound of a nose being wiped on a sleeve.

I saw her shoes below the gap,

scuffed brown heels, sensible and old,

pressed hard against the tile

as if she was trying to push the building

into the ground.
