The bank statements curl in the pit out back

The bank statements curl in the pit out back,

turning from white into carbon and black.

A credit card offer from three years ago

flaps like a skeletal wing in the glow.

I sit on the bricks with a slice of cold pie,

watching the interest rates blacken and die.

The grease on my palms catches light from the spark,

a smudge of the living left out in the dark.
