I pulled the plastic bin from out the dark

I pulled the plastic bin from out the dark,
looking for a place to make a mark.
The corduroy was heavy, stiff, and brown,
a relic of the boy I took to town.
I tried to shove my shoulder through the sleeve,
a lie I really wanted to believe.
The thread gave way, a tiny, sudden snap,
falling like a secret in my lap.
A copper button hit the floor and spun,
hiding where the dust had already won.
Under the radiator, out of sight,
leaving me alone in the middle of the night.
