The lead is blunt a dull and smoky gray

The lead is blunt, a dull and smoky gray.

I wrote your name and want to take it back,

but the pink head is ground down to the fray,

leaving nothing but a smudge of carbon black.

I press the silver ferrule to the page,

the metal teeth are biting through the grain.

It doesn't hide the word, just shows the rage,

a jagged scar that doubles up the pain.
