Residual Heat

The radiator kicks the kitchen wall.

The air in here is brittle, thin, and dry.

I tip the heavy cylinder to pour,

and watch the steam go crawling toward the sky.

The glass inside gives a hollow, loose rattle,

like a tooth that's decided it’s ready to go.

My knuckles are white where I grip the base,

while the heat starts its heavy and silent flow.
