Uncovering Layers

A flick of the wrist, and the Band-Aid gives way,
its sticky embrace betraying the skin,
like a harsh reminder of things I can’t say,
a lingering ache that runs deep within.
Peeling back layers, an echo of pain,
revealing a scar that I thought had grown small,
a tender reminder that wounds leave a stain,
as if I could outrun what lingers, what calls.
The crumpled strip lies on the bathroom counter,
stained and curled, a badge of the fight,
I stand here, heart heavy, and wish I could slumber,
yet still feel the tug of the past in the night.
