Grid Failure

The sky turned a color like a bruise on a plum,

then the lightning struck out and the wires went numb.

The hum of the fridge simply shuddered and died,

leaving a hollow of evening inside.

I looked at the stove where the time used to glow,

but the little green box had nothing to show.

Just a square of deep nothing, a gap in the wall,

while the shadows grew long and the rain started to fall.
