Surface Tension

The nozzle goes click and the gasoline scent

hangs in the air like a check that was spent.

The rain came down hard but it didn't stay long,

leaving a puddle where something is wrong.

A swirl of bright oil, a peacock’s green eye,

staring up from the tar at the gray of the sky.

A beautiful mess in a hole in the ground,

shimmering there without making a sound.
