The rearview was tilted too low.

I saw the red light change,

then saw the wire

caught in the light of the sun.


It was stiff, a piece of silver thread

snagged in the dark of my temple.

Not a sign of age, really,

just a glitch in the hardware,

like a piece of tinsel you find

in the carpet in July.


I reached for the root

but the man in the truck behind me

hit his horn

and I had to go.
