The Card

The engine hasn't started yet.

The grass is brown and soaked with wet.

I found the card inside my coat,

a crumpled, unread, stupid note.

I meant to tell them how you laughed

when we were on that wooden raft.

Instead I watched the shovel swing

and heard the wooden coffin ring.
