Bearing Witness

Packing the china is slow work.

The sugar bowl has a jagged line

running through the handle

where the superglue failed to hide.

I blamed the dog.

He’s been dead for twelve years.

I touch the yellow bead of resin

stuck to the porcelain edge.

The lie is the only thing

still holding the pieces together.
