Hardness Scale

The kitchen knife is far too wide.

I peel the cedar back to hide

the silver lead that waits inside.

The dust is on my thumb.

The point is buried in the list.

The slick, gray track is hard to miss.

The graphite's sharp enough to kiss

until the wood goes numb.
