Simmer

The screen says 'serves two'

but the kitchen is quiet.

I’m boiling the water

on a salt-heavy diet.

The pan is too cold

and the oil is too thin.

I’m waiting for something

to finally begin.

The yolk hits the metal

and breaks in a streak.

The floorboards are old

and they’ve started to squeak.
