Draft

The newsman said a name today

that sounded like the place he stayed

before the frost took half his toe.

I put the kettle on to go—

no, I mean to boil.

The kitchen glass is loose and thin.

It lets the January in.

I found this eagle in the drawer

behind the forks. I think he wore

it on his collar once.

The pin is bent. It’s sharp and old.

It catches on the woolen fold

of my sweater. It tries to hold

on to something. Or maybe it just

wants to tear the thread.
