Sister brought it up at dinner

Sister brought it up at dinner,

laughing, reaching for the bread.

You broke that horse. I always knew.

The dog just shook its head.

Leg glued crooked, slightly shorter—

twenty years up on the shelf.

You'd only see it if you knew.

She knew. She kept it to herself.

Mom believed me. Dog's been dead

since 2003. My sister's grin

sat there like a door held open,

daring me to walk back in.
