The Drowned Rat

This damp grey thing, sprawled on the tile,

a weary surrender, day by day.

It mocks my efforts with a soggy smile,

letting the water just seep away.

It waits for me, a sodden mess,

a surrender flag, limp and defeated.

Another task, more helplessness,

a battle I’ve long since conceded.

The floor absorbs its damp embrace,

a small, dark stain, a quiet shame.

There’s no escape from this place,

just the water, and the endless game.
