The Unbroken Hum

I dialed his number, then his other.

Both went to the same blank space.

No ring, no voice, no word, no bother,

just that sound you can’t erase.

A flat, unbroken drone,

that fills the receiver tight.

It means he’s not at home,

or out of reach, out of light.

It’s the sound of never getting through,

the static in the bone.

A constant, hollow cue

that leaves you on your own.

This hum that says it’s done,

a void I can’t transcend.
