The Missing Fastener

The favorite cardigan,

worn soft against the bone.

I reach for it, ready,

but something's overthrown.

The top spot vacant,

a tiny, gaping hole.

Just two loops of thread,

that used to hold.

They pull apart a little,

like mouths that can't quite meet.

The day feels incomplete,

a hurried, rough retreat.
