The Muted Phrase

I tried to hear you say it,

that one specific thing

you always said when you were amused.


My mind went back,

found the photograph.

Your mouth open,

ready to speak,

a silent O.


But the sound isn't there.

Just the shape of the word,

hanging in the air,

a ghost note,

unheard.
