What You Saw Before I Did

You pointed.

There. That mark.

I'd never looked.

Never had reason.

My collarbone is just

where my neck ends,

a geography I thought

I already knew.

So small.

So there.

I checked the mirror

at every angle,

twisted my neck

trying to catch it.

Found it.

The brown spot,

barely visible,

only when the light

hits right.

How long have I carried

this and not known?

You saw it first.

You knew my body

better than I did.

Now I can't stop

looking for it.

In mirrors.

In reflections.

In windows.

Checking.

Always checking.

To make sure it's still

where you found it.

To make sure I'm still

the person you were

looking at.
