Found Time

The warehouse went dark at three.

A transformer blew, or a fuse gave out.

Suddenly the parking lot was full of men

walking toward their cars

like they’d been let out of school.

I pulled into the driveway

while the sun was still high enough

to make the shadow of my sedan

stretch all the way to the porch.

The house is quiet.

No one expects me yet.

I'm sitting on the floor by the door

listening to the fridge hum,

holding this hour like a coin

I found in the dryer.

The coin in the dryer is such a good image.

I've had a transformer blow at my job before too.

It’s such a weird feeling when everything just stops like that.

The part about school letting out was okay.

Yeah, it really felt like that in the moment.

The quiet of an empty house is the best.
