Defer

I flip it in the kitchen light—

let it spin between my fingers,

watch it rise and fall.

Some call it luck, some call it

fate, but I call it a way

to step aside, to let the coin

decide what I don't have the nerve to choose.

Heads means I stay.

Tails means I go.

Either way, it's not on me.

The coin settles.

I don't look at it.

I never do.
