What the text said

The number came through at 3:47 PM.

Exact. Small. Somehow immense.

You knew exactly what it meant—

the year of pretending it wasn't true.

You knew exactly when you borrowed it.

Knew exactly that you'd forgotten it

on purpose, the way you forget

things that live in your ribs.

He finally asked.

You could pay him back.

That's not the thing.

The thing is the feeling

when you saw the number

and remembered that you owed him

not the money—

the acknowledgment

that you're the kind of person

who lets time make it smaller.

Who hopes it disappears.
