Time Shows Itself

I found it in the shower this morning,

caught between my fingers, silver and thin,

and I held it up without warning

to see where aging begins.

Just one strand, just enough to know

that time doesn't skip anyone over,

that my body's keeping the score,

turning me into someone older.

I should have thrown it away,

but I held it up to the light,

watched it bend, watched it stay,

silver proof that I'm not young tonight.

Tomorrow there will be another,

and another after that, I know,

and I'll keep finding them, another

small surrender to time's slow show.
