Grocery Store Grace

The glass of the freezer is foggy and thick,

hiding the bags of the carrots and chicken.

I saw you there, looking quite tired and sick,

while the clock in my head started to quicken.

You were arguing hard over fish sticks and price,

with a kid who was pulling the hem of your coat.

I thanked the high heavens I didn't play nice,

and kept all those "I love yous" stuck in my throat.
