Drawer Inventory

I was looking for a double-A battery.

Instead, I found the clink.

It’s a dull sound, heavier than a penny

but lighter than a wrench.

The metal is cold.

It’s got a notch in the side that catches

the grease of my thumb.

It’s been sitting under a pile of rubber bands

and expired coupons for three moves now.

I don't even remember the guy who wore it,

just the way he smelled like laundry starch.

I put it back. I still need that battery.
