The Click from the Hallway

The bag of trash is heavy in my hand,

plastic straining against the chicken bones.

I stood there while the metal met the frame,

the deadbolt sliding home.

A sound so final, it sucked the air

out of the foyer carpet.

Even the dust motes stayed suspended,

refusing to drift or settle

in the wake of the departure.
