The Silvering

I was looking for a reason to be tired

in the mirror above the sink.

I found a wire instead,

stiff and bright as a missing link.

It stood out against the brown

like a piece of fishing line

hooked into the side of my head,

claiming what used to be mine.

I pulled it tight with the tweezers

and felt the roots give a tiny snap.

The clock didn't stop ticking,

it just finished another lap.
