I thought I could trim the edges

I thought I could trim the edges

and save twenty bucks on the chair.

Now I’m staring at the porcelain bowl

and the jagged clumps of my hair.

They look like a drowned, dark animal

clogging the throat of the drain.

I took too much off the left side

trying to even the stain.

It’s messy and short and uneven,

a hack job I can’t quite undo.

I stand with the kitchen shears shaking,

wondering what else I’ll push through.
