Inheritance

The toaster is chrome and curved,

bending the kitchen into a funhouse.

I saw my hand reaching for the bread

and for a second, I thought

he’d come back from the ground.


The same blue rivers under the skin,

the knuckles knotted like old rope.

I didn't mean to take this from him,

but here it is,

gripping the butter knife.
