Line of Sight

My thumb scrolls through the insults

while he stands by the vitamins.

Three people away.

The screen is a hive of buzzing jokes

about his life falling apart in the suburbs.

I look up and see the two pale moles

just above his starch-white collar.

A map of something quiet.

I feel like I’ve broken into his house

just by standing here,

watching the way his shoulders hunch

while he checks the price of aspirin.
