He took the fork from her hand.

Then he reached for the napkin

and rubbed the tines until they shined.

She didn't even look up from her plate.


They’ve lived here thirty years.

There’s a jagged crack in the linoleum

right between their chairs.

It’s a border they both respect.

I feel sick watching him polish the silver

while she eats in the quiet.
